Ground Maintenance/Improvements

(1) Pond: A most recent and costly project will be to clean out and grade the pond area. Estimates are in the $24,000 range. Grants are being sought as is contributions from friends of the cemetery and sponsorship from organizations. The pond, which was very large, was mandated to be filed in by the city in the 1940s because it overflowed into the city sewer system. The pond is small now, but is still fed by two natural underground springs. The stone work on what was the breast of the dam has collapsed and needs to be rebuilt or cemented. An aerator will be placed in the pond and a programmed setting will allow the water to circulate. A trench has to be built to bring the electricity from 16th Street to the barn and from the barn to the pond for the aerator.
(2) Electric power to barn and shrubbery along property line: An electric line needs to be run from the 16th Street pole to the barn. Currently the barn uses a generator for power. In addition, shrubbery should be planted to separate the neighbor’s wall from the cemetery grounds and to camouflage the wall. Once electricity is run to the barn, then a trench can be run to the pond to provide electricity to the aerator which will be placed in the pond.
(3) Landscaping and planting at chapel: The grounds directly in front of the entrance road and facing the side of the chapel are in need of landscaping. Old shrubbery has been removed and some sparse plantings have been made, but the entire area could use more plants, perhaps some annuals, and definitely some landscaping.
